Advantages: beautiful sea, nice people
Disadvantages: very hot during the summer
Each year it's a place where I can’t miss to go during my holidays. It's indeed a delicious town, unique in its kind. I adore the little shops of Amalfi, overflowing of typical products (citrus fruit, limoncello, mozzarella, corals, ceramics) but also of many attractive trifles. And the imagination of the Amalfitan people always gives a particular touch. For example there is here a little shops that exposes bunches of red hot chilli peppers with the poster "natural Viagra." If you leave the principal course, you will discover the true face of Amalfi: without crowd, it's a calm little village that lives its daily life. Amalfi it's the center of ancient paper mills, some of them are still on the luxuriant mountains that surround it. It's an itinerary that I there recommend because it's very suggestive. The Amalfitan paper, famous all over the world, it's a manufactured item and it’s very sought-after especially for wedding shares and as writing paper. You can see an authentic "mastro cartaio" (a man who makes paper) at work, an elderly and very available man, that will be happy to show you his art. You will follow all the phases of creation of a sheet of paper, from the press to the drying. The beach is always crowded, so I recommend you to go in the afternoon, when the climate is sweet , or to go for a nighttime dive . At nights Amalfi changes and becomes place of meeting for the young vacationers searching fun. How many evenings I spent on the stupendous stairway of the Cathedral, laughing with my friends and admiring the splendid little square, with the fountain, little bar tables, the refined palaces all around. A forced standstill is Pansa, the best confectionery of Amalfi, for tasting the "delizia al limone" the typical cake of the town. It’s covered by lemon cream and it will be offered with a glass of limoncello liquor. During August, there
is a stupendous initiative by the Comune of Amalfi, that foresees a tourist turn at night throught the white alleys of the village, illuminated by little lights. The evenings are always full of life: I still remember a Latin American dance night in a little square where everybody had a great time. At nights you can’t miss a jump in the croissants shop that you can see on the principal course. You will notice it because of the crowd out from the shop tasting a “baba'” or a cake full of chocolate. The best period to visit Amalfi is, without any doubt, September or May and June. The first time that I have been there I lost myself looking at the sunsets on the sea that colors the sky with pink, red and violet shades. If you go to Amalfi by ferry-boat, you will enjoy a spectacular view: a complete panorama of the village, with the cathedral that sprouts between the cottages, the convent of cappuccini monks on top, the mountains that embrace all the town, settled with laziness on the sea.
