Amman is a city that illustrates perfectly the two opposing images that many westerners hold of the Arab world. In parts it is a ultra-modern sleek city with designer malls and oil rich families living in ridiculous luxury and on the other it is the winding streets, full of banter-full venders of spices and poverty with a muezzin call filtering through in the background. Taking a look at both sides of the city is worthwhile just for the sheer contrast, however, unless you want to shop for designer clothes and watches most tourists will spend most of their time in the old city. I arrived in Amman on a JET bus from Jordan's second city Irbid in the north. I was in my element, enjoying that "just crossed a border, in a new country" feel. The journey over from Galilee in Israel had been remarkably easy but in my true style, I managed to find a way of doing things difficultly. Arriving in the JET bus station on the outskirts of Amman, I was unaware that a new one was being used and although the previous bus station wasn't actually on my old map, it clearly stated that it was 2km from the centre. You may be wondering at the title , but Amman was known as Philadelphia by the romans who have left their mark here with many ruins to explore and cretainly one of the best preserved amphitheatres I have seen.This is in the downtown area of Amman and can easily be got to by Taxi, do get a Taxi from your Hotel asd they will ensure a good taxis that will treat you well, nevere ever pay more than £3 for a trip within the city!!. Make sure the meter is running too. Shopping in this city is a real delight.
