I went to Amsterdam on a weekend break with the folks from my local pub. It was the first time I had been away to Holland, and I did not know what to expect. Would every street corner be lined with hookers? Would there be a cloud of cannabis fumes hanging over the city? Did they speak English?

Well, I needn't have worried. It is a wonderful city. The streets are generally clean, and there isn't much risk of falling into a canal. The red-light district is pretty easy to spot if you do or do not want to visit it (indeed I caused a stir when I looked at one of the hooker's windows and exclaimed 'hello auntie!', and the drugs are there if you need them. Naturally, in a pub group there was a certain feeling of having to fit in, and I won't say if I did or did not inhale- all I will state is that I won the first leg of the 'Looking like s**t in the morning' competition! What I can heartily recomment is the food. I ate in three restaurants during my weekend stay. Planet Hollywood was standard fare. The Italian restaurant was okay, but pizza tastes like pizza wherever you go outside of Italy, but the Indonesian restaurant 'het Speciaal' was out of this world. If you ever go there, you must visit, only book up because it is extremely popular.

The people are very friendly, they don't take too kindly to troublemakers, but they appreciate it if you have a good time, spend money, and don't cause any trouble. Only keep out of the red-light district if you are on your own after dark, unless you want to wake up on a sex-slave ship- and as for the women......

Actually, the Red Light district is an education! It's also very safe and not at all seedy, unlike the St Denis district of Paris.

I've been loads of times and I have never felt as safe as I did in the red light area (my mates made me go there of course!)

Sorry, but I couldn't rate otherwise. So little text for such a fascinating city! Why not update the op? I'll gladly come back and read again.
