Have only been on a couple of short breaks, but I fell in love with the place.
You are told before you go, you must go to the red light distict, and beware of all the druggies and beggars. Well I already live in the centre of a city and I see these everyday, so it was no great shock horror thing to us.
I did notice the police were armed and went around in pairs, would not like to cross them.
In fact we felt quite safe.
To be honest we were too interested in the architecture, museums, shops, canals, floating markets, flowers
etc. and never got around to even go to the red light district.
The majority of people speak perfect English, and found them very helpful.
I love the laid back, live and let live attitude of everyone.
This is a city of what you want it to be
lively full of fun-
peaceful and interesting-
sex and drugs-
cultural
Make of it what you will, it's up to you, no matter what age you are.
Just wish I had the time and money to spend a decent length of time there. I feel the urge for another short break already.
