Advantages: Great atmosphere, Cheap beer & good food, Lots of varieties of beer
Disadvantages: Hangover central
Unfortunately, the flight from DeadHorse was delayed by about three hours, which was a real shame, because I could have really done with some quality time in Humpy's. Let me explain.... Getting back into Anchorage from Prudhoe Bay and you feel like a beer. Given that it was past 10:30 in the evening (and being a Brit) you think the chances of a few beers are limited. Not so, there is always Humpy's! Getting out of the car, I am reminded that we are not in Newcastle or Edinburgh, it really is that cold out there. Only -25 Deg C at the time, postively sweltering compared to Prudhoe (and there are no Polar Bears around either.) Walk past the bouncer on the door (who doesn't even consider asking me for ID, whic deflates my "I look young" ego) and try to get near the bar, no mean feat in itself. Luckily, two people were just heading out the door and the two of us (my Alaskan host and I) grab them. Now, you're in a pub, you've had a long week - what are you going to do? You can't just ask for a beer - there are over 40 of them, and so many different types. Thankfully, in the USA, things are picking up and the choices extend beyond Michelob, Busch, Bud and Schlitz (spelling?). There are now a whole host of microbreweries that put together a few nice beers ranging from brown ales and barley wines, to porters and stouts through to IPA and bitter. Seemingly, all of them are available in Humpy's. The beer menu is even better than the food menu, and that is saying something! The atmosphere is buzzing, the band were loud and got better the more beers I consumed (but then so does my dancing, my wit and my devasting good looks. Unfortunately, my judgement is impaired at the same rate.) The age range and demogrphics were pretty amazing too, everyone from 21 to 101 seemingly, all enjoying the beer and company. The place is very much a "spit 'n' sawdust" pub, no dress code and very un
restrained. The only unusual part from the normal pub experience was the waitress service (and she certainly knew how to dress to get tips!!) The quality of the beer was excellent and the price was pretty good, although with the dollar at the current exchange rates, everywhere is good value. The place is definitely not somewhere for a romantic tete a tete, unless your name is Lenny from MotorHead, but is a good start or finish for an evenings entertainment. The beer is a touch on the cold side, but then this is America. A little more education and they'll have the beer scene sorted.... Would definitely recommend the Mooses Drool Brown Ale, but don't go for multiple pints and expect to enjoy the flight home the next day...my hangover lasted till Minneapolis! So, going to Anchorage? Enjoy the beautiful scenery, friendly people, views of Mount McKinley and the mooses by day, enjoy Humpy's and Mooses Drool by night. You'll miss a great night out otherwise!
