Atlanta

Atlanta is a vibrant metropolitan city in the heart of the American south. As it is a Delta hub the airport gives flight options to and from many different places. After living there for many years I thought I would share some of my knowledge on places to go, things to see and bits of information should you find yourself visiting. Cheap flights and the promise of all-you-can-drink Coca Cola lured me to Atlanta, and while not necessarily the best 2 reasons to visit a place, my trip turned out to be good. Georgia is one of the southern states, and Atlanta a southern city in such a state. This means 2 things: hot summer weather, and laid back, friendly natives. While you can't often sum up an entire city's climate or population in such a way, it definitely seemed true here. Atlanta doesn’t appear to be a touristy area. Most of the places to visit etc are just as much for the locals as visitors. This meant that it was cheaper than similar cities and more compact and easy to get around. We found most things within walking distance of our hotel – Embassy Suites at Centennial Park. If further away the local transport system MARTA was easy to use and very cheap. We went in July and temperatures were in the high eighties/low nineties an the humidity was very high. Atlanta is a mecca for shopaholics. There are shopping malls all over the place. One of the biggest malls, Lenox Square Mall, has about 300 shops under one roof. Most worldwide famous brands are represented here. The locals say (with American accent), "If you can't find it here, it won't be anywhere else!" I found the prices in Atlanta generally cheaper than the UK. A chart CD album, for example, was only $12.99. That is another evidence that Britain really is rip-off Britain. Before starting this review I must admit to being hugely biased. I had wanted to visit it for years, and when I eventually did it was during a holiday in which my girlfriend and I got engaged (aah!). Therefore it has very special memories for me. Atlanta has been described as the Los Angeles of the South. Such a comment is grossly unfair to a wonderful city, which has a lot more green space in it, more space to move around in and a generally more relaxed feel about it.
