Advantages: Very interesting

Disadvantages: Absolutely none if you can read a map

Although little publicized the mountains in Australia make an interesting trip.

I drove from Melbourne tthrough the Alps and then past the Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and inland to well north of Sydney.

You would need several days as the roads are narrow and for long distances not tarred.

Apart from the scenery which is fantastic the route makes one understand the history of Australia much better.

There was the rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney. The customs posts on the state frontier.

On the "old Great North Road" there are coaching inns traditional frams and orchards. In places there were still only ferries.

This is not a dangerous route the signs are good and there is plenty of petrol although you should always keep enough for 100 miles in the tank!

Towns to pass through include Albury, Thredbo, Canberra, Parammatta.

Sights to see include hydr-electric dams, vineyards, the highest mountain in Australia, inland ports and all the history encapsulated in Canberra itself.
