Advantages: clean and small, you can cover the whole country in a day
Disadvantages: where do I begin?
Bandar Seri begawan the capital of Brunei Darussalam is every bit as interesting as watching paint dry. If you are looking for excitement and have insomnia do not even go anywhere near it. Everyone is at home watching satellite television, which leaves you, the visitor, wondering what to do besides walk around the deserted streets. If you are lucky you might come across the night market which sells mainly local delicacies. The grilled fish is excellent value for money and tasty too. Don't be out after 9.00 pm or you may find yourself walking down empty streets and be the only person about. Don't expect any pubs, clubs or entertainment outlets as Brunei is a dry country in every sense of the word. In terms of attractions (during the day!) that the visitor could, I suppose kill time at, is the museum, the 'Kampung Air' or water village and...not much else. At night there is the possibility of going to Jerudong park, which even I have to admit is a first class theme park. Jerudong park is akin to Disneyland but with the exception that all the rides are FREE. Yup, I kid you not. You can go on the roller coasters ten times if you want and even if you are the only person there, they'll run it for you. So, I guess if there is one reason to go to Bandar Seri Begawan then Jerudong is it. All in all, it is like one big retirement village.

- 20/01/02 That is the case with most of the restaurants there. In many of the pool halls you can buy it too. Other than Jerudong Park, there is the Empire Hotel if peole want to stay in the ABSOLUTE lap of luxury. The place is amazingly beautiful. I cant say enough about that hotel. The pools are made to look like lagoons, it has its own cinema and bowling alley on site...a perfect place for a tourist to stay at if they want to be spoilt.
The beaches are good too...they arent crowded unlike other beaches around south east asia. There are a lot of hidden treasures in Brunei...i suppose you just have to live here to find them out though. |

- 29/05/01 I think this is an accurate picture of life in Bandar. It is possible to get a beer if you really want one, however. If you are in the centre of town, there's a large Chinese restaurant in the building at the water village end of Jalan Sultan. The restaurant is called Phong Moon. Ask a waitress for "special tea" - teh istimewa - and you will get a can of Heineken in a teapot. It's also a first class restaurant with excellent dimsum. |
