BangkokNewest Review: ... so you will always pay more being a farang (westerner). Lumpini park is a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle. You can hire peddle boats on the lake here and encounter giant monitor lizards (baby godzillas!) that inhabit the waterways and lakes in Bangkok! Head for the markets found all over the city that have many wonderful food vendors selling cheap and tasty Thai dishes. It's ... more |

Bangkok is quite a fun capital city with some good shopping and some decent sights. The main attractions are the huge golden Reclining Buddha and the Royal Palace with it's hundreds of little wats, it's a real testament to the Thai nations love of there King. Khao San road is worth a look with it's cheap pad thai vendors (30p a plate!), bars, and very cheap counterfeit goods (replica football shirts cost about £3 each!). It's also lined with travel agents selling tours around Thailand and bus/train/plane tickets to destinations all over Thailand and across the world. The area around Khao San Road is where most the budget accommodation is ... Read the complete review

I wasn't particularly looking forward to visiting Bangkok as it was towards the end of our round the world trip and I was expecting it to be hard work. In truth, Bangkok is a very exciting, friendly and cheap place to visit. If you like shopping, then there are lots of street stalls and markets. The famous Khao San Road has got to be visited. You can buy just about anything for hardly anything! We ended up buying two suitcases to fill up with presents for family! Its also good for booking day trips out. We booked a trip to the bridge on the river kwai which was brilliant. We also had a Thai massage on the street behind Khao San, which was amazing. I ... Read the complete review

Bangkok is a complete mayhem of a city and the hustle and bustle of the place is just mad. You will never find another place quite like it. Everywhere you go there are taxis and tuk tuks speeding past you, market stalls along the streets, people trying to lure you into shops and bars, and hot food steaming from food carts in the roads. The amount of things going on never ceased to amaze me and for a first timer, it can be a very daunting. Bangkok was the last stop on mine and my husband's 5 week trip to Thailand, and I'm glad it was last as we just wouldn't have known what to do with ourselves if it had been our first stop. As soon as we arrived in the ... Read the complete review

For a city that we spent less than 24 hours in, there's certainly a lot to say. We arrived in Bangkok en-route to London, and made it through immigration and customs with no dramas. It took roughly an hour to get to the hotel and after checking in and phoning home we hit the streets. There were a few markets setting up on the main road outside our hotel so we wandered down past them all, after being hassled to buy by most of the marketeers. We also encountered a driver who offered to drive us round for an hour to see the sights for roughly 2 pounds and decided it would be the easiest way to look around given that we only had one night. The bike thingy he drove ... Read the complete review

My low rating of Bangkok is because of my own traumatic experiences there, being shot at and being forced to leave the city for my own safety. Bangkok is a large city of over eight million inhabitants with a fascinating history, which retains much of its beautiful architecture, making it one of the most important destinations on any keen traveler's lifetime itinerary. The name Bangkok was used from the eighteenth century and is still the official English name for the capital city of Thailand, but it is known locally, in Thai, as Krung Thep Nakhon. Bangkok has one of Asia's most important airports so getting there from almost any major city in the ... Read the complete review
