Advantages: Great nightlife, cheap tasty Thai food, some decent sights, bargains to be had for shopaholics!

Disadvantages: Noisy and hectic, can get draining after a couple of days and gets old quickly

Bangkok is quite a fun capital city with some good shopping and some decent sights.

The main attractions are the huge golden Reclining Buddha and the Royal Palace with it's hundreds of little wats, it's a real testament to the Thai nations love of there King.

Khao San road is worth a look with it's cheap pad thai vendors (30p a plate!), bars, and very cheap counterfeit goods (replica football shirts cost about £3 each!). It's also lined with travel agents selling tours around Thailand and bus/train/plane tickets to destinations all over Thailand and across the world. The area around Khao San Road is where most the budget accommodation is found.

The MBK shopping mall is a huge multi-storey modern shopping mall (with western prices to match). The top floors have an awesome book super-store, sports cars, and awesome electronics stores presenting the latest hi-tech gadgets and gizmos. Even if you have no money to spend it's worth visiting to browse MBK and play with the gadgets in the electronics stores.

The sky-train is a cheap way to get around the city and quite fun. Taxis are often very expensive and it's hard to convince drivers to turn on there taxi-metres so you will always pay more being a farang (westerner).

Lumpini park is a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle. You can hire peddle boats on the lake here and encounter giant monitor lizards (baby godzillas!) that inhabit the waterways and lakes in Bangkok!

Head for the markets found all over the city that have many wonderful food vendors selling cheap and tasty Thai dishes.

It's not quite the City of Angels (if not only because of the prostitution scene!) as is its nickname, but Bangkok is still an interesting and often weird city worthy of a night or two.

Summary: Nightlife is great but you can see everything in a day...
