Advantages: Scenery, Clean air, Friendly locals.

Disadvantages: Truck-loads of tourists.

The small village, known for its Passion Play (not a seedy late-night movie - but one which is more Christian orientated) nestles comfortably in the Bavarian Alps. I'm not religious, so a visit to watch the much-publicised Passion Play was interesting to say the least. It doesn't help when you realise that the whole play is in German (well we are in Germany) so the visual effects were what I concentrated on. They wouldn't be out of place in a low-budget movie - and so I felt much respect for the actors and behind-the-scenes staff who worked so hard for the pride of their village (all residents of Oberammergau have some input into the play which is performed every ten years).

You needn't visit Oberammergau just for the play, I found the most enjoyable experience when just exploring the village and viewing some of the intricate wall-paintings on the houses and the half-timbered buildings (which can be found all over Bavaria). I think I'll go again someday - only this time for longer.
