Advantages: Far better than expected
Disadvantages: Nothing really
A few weeks ago, a couple of mates and I booked an exceptionally last minute deal - the day before - to go to the Valencian coastal town of Benidorm for four nights. It cost us just shy of £300 each for flights, transfers, accommodation and all-inclusive food, drink and facilities at the Flamingo Hotel.
While we didnt actually stay at the Flamingo, rather in a large block of appartments five minutes walk away, which were exceptionally comfortable and well-furnished, the arrangement was fine. The food, drink and facilities at the Flamingo were all to a decent standard, with a wide choice, buffet-style for food at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Despite going out every night we actually made it to breakfast every day!
Benidorm itself was actually far better than I expected or than the stereotypes of it being 'chavy' would suggest. The town itself although looking a little bit like Birmingham-on-Sea, was actually very pleasant, with lots of shops and restaurants, not that I can comment on the restaurants due to the all-inclusive nature of our package!
The beach was gorgeous and very clean, with an attractive promenade behind. Although Benidorm is infamous for its multiplicity of tower blocks, this did not deter from our enjoyment of the holiday - overall it added to the vibrancy! Going out to bars and clubs which were mainly situated along one long main strip was also very enjoyable, although if this is not for you then it is certainly very avoidable because it makes up only a tiny part of the town over on one side.
The people were generally very friendly and we got chatting to quite a few locals, mainly young people like ourselves and mainly through the international language of football - even arranging a game of beach football with some Spanish lads!
There is alot to do in Benidorm and you can see why it is so popular with British tourists, especially as everything is fairly cheap. Although it is a bit too Anglocised for my liking, we had a great time and I would recommend it to anyone, from people like ourselves looking to party through to families. It seems the majority of the hotels are equipped with decent swimming pools and entertainment facilities so there is alot of fun to be had!
Overall Benidorm is great for a short break for a week or so and is situated roughly an hour's drive from Alicante airport
Summary: A great holiday for anyone on a budget
