Advantages: small and easy, friendly, plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: pricey (twice the cost of UK)
By a very long way! Having said that as part of a 6 day taster holiday it was a brilliant introduction. Bergen is just a small city but has much to offer. Art and culture on the one hand and fantastic scenery on the other. The actual town/harbour area is well renowned for being pretty - and didn't disappoint. It feels like a very civilised place to be - like the whole of Norway as far as I can tell - and a superb place to spend some time. The art museums, containing superb collections, are mostly all neatly gathered together in a single street overlooking a large pond which I imagine doubles for an ice rink in the winter. The scenery is immediately available by taking the eight minute ride up the funicular to the top of one of the seven mountains. This gives not only excellent views of the town itself but also the surrounding countryside for many miles - breathtaking! On reaching the top there are plenty of tracks to wander around. And then of course there are the fjords. We didn't have time for a trip - but I'm sure such a trip would be wonderful.
