Located off the east coast of the United States, it is situated around 1,100 miles (1770 km) northeast of Miami, Florida and 840 miles (1350 km) south of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The nearest landmass is Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, about 640 miles (1030 km) west-northwest (see Geography section below). It is the oldest remaining British overseas territory, settled by England a century before the Acts of Union and two centuries before the creation of the United Kingdom.

Bermuda isn’t perhaps the most popular destination for Europeans and Briton’s in particular, despite the fact it is the largest overseas territory of the United Kingdom. In fact many people incorrectly assume it is part of the Caribbean Islands, which are in fact much further south. Bermuda itself lies at a latitude of 32degrees N and is therefore just outside the Tropics regions and is indeed warmed by the Gulf Stream. In fact temperatures rarely drop below 20 degrees C even in winter, and the Island can be extremely humid in summer. I have not met many people who have been to Bermuda on holiday or indeed have considered it as a holiday destination. The reasons for this could include its reputation as being a bit pricey but mainly I think because most people planning to travel over the Atlantic for an island holiday are going to head for the Caribbean rather than Bermuda, which lies all by itself a thousand miles further north. Since I announced I was moving to Bermuda, I have had quite a few people say they thought it was in the Caribbean but in fact the nearest coastline / land mass to Bermuda is that of Carolina in the US which is about 600 miles away. Bermuda is one of the most incredible vacation spots in the world. The island itself is very small and quaint yet the culture and entertainment quite exceed what is expected. Scuba diving and snorkeling are huge and all watersports are available. The island has a lot of unique glass blowing shops and trendy boutiques. Being positioned where it is, Bermuda has a lot of different terrains. One side of the island is edged in cliffs and the other in amazingly soft beaches.
