BilbaoNewest Review: ... lightly. Around it were Warhols, an unexpected Liechtenstein, and more. The main focus on the publicity for the Bilbao is invariably the list of temporary exhibitions, which last a few months or more. These can be on a whole variety of themes, from Wim Wenders cinematography, to the most celebrated American pop artist. But to discuss this further, one must turn from a general overview to ... more |

Many yonks ago, when theediscerning was a nipper, he took a map of Europe, and chose nearly at random a selection of places he'd like to visit when older. Out of a few in Iberia, Bilbao, on the northern Spanish coast was one. Why? "England played their opening World Cup 1982 game there." Needless to say, it was a different reason that prompted theed's visit to the town in the summer of 2004. Yes, it was a guided tour of the whole country. And the reason so many similar tours pass through is the subject of this op, the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao. THE BUILDING If you haven't seen or heard of the building involved with ... "Where's that then?" asked our hairdresser last week, when I mentioned that we were going to Bilbao for a few days. "It's a port in North-Eastern Spain, in the Basque region", I replied, stretching my own research into the subject to its limit. "So why are you going there?" she continued. "Because I've never been there", I returned, hoping that that was the depth of the delving - and it was. There are several good reasons to go to Bilbao, especially off-season, but the chief one is that you now can! You can get there by car ferry directly from Portsmouth. It's another of ... Bilbao is often overlooked, in favour of Barcelona or Madrid, but it really is a great place to visit for a weekend - and with direct, budget flights it's easier than ever. The city is quite small and well laid out, with lots of parks and open spaces. Perhaps because of it's size hotels seem to be better value than in Barcelona and it's reasonable to stay near the centre - which you should, as everything will then be within walking distance. Guggenheim is of course the star - but the building (which is fantastic) is better than the content. After that, spend time in the cafes around Grand Via & Larreategui and of course in the old town (Casco Viejo), ... Read the complete review

You go to spain thinking its going to be nice and sunny, and indeed it was on the first day of my holiday, but in reality its just like England. Most days were cloudy, or normal, and it rained quite regularly, and if you didn't have an umbrella you felt out of place. I stayed with my girlfriend, who actually lives there, so we stayed in a flat in the centre of town, rather than a hotel. Despite the weather, which IS nice sometimes, Bilbao is a really really nice city. The Guggenheim is a spectacular piece of architecture, although the collections inside are not all that interesting. Modern art, which I do like, but there wasn't enough of it. The building ... Read the complete review
