Advantages: Compact, Interesting, Direct flights
Disadvantages: None really
Bilbao is often overlooked, in favour of Barcelona or Madrid, but it really is a great place to visit for a weekend - and with direct, budget flights it's easier than ever. The city is quite small and well laid out, with lots of parks and open spaces. Perhaps because of it's size hotels seem to be better value than in Barcelona and it's reasonable to stay near the centre - which you should, as everything will then be within walking distance. Guggenheim is of course the star - but the building (which is fantastic) is better than the content. After that, spend time in the cafes around Grand Via & Larreategui and of course in the old town (Casco Viejo), the later is mainly pedestrianised and full of cafes/ bars and restaurants, Try KAZCO restaurant, which I fould very good and lively. Eating out is not quite as late as in 'further south' Spain, but still aim to eat at about 9.30pm to be in with everyone else - booking is a good idea at weekends. For shopping: most of the good stuff is on the Grand Via and Larretegui area and very compact. Final mention for the airport - Santiago Calatrava designed and almost as stunning as the Guggenheim. A

- 27/09/01 Sorry for the low rating, but I would have liked a lot more information about the city. How easy is it to get around? What public transportation is there? Is it expensive? How easy is it to get to Bilbao - or indeed, away from? Were there a lot of choices of restaurants? What is there to do, other than the Guggenheim?
If you should update this opinion, to add more information, let me know, and I'll come back and rerate. |
