Birmingham (Alabama) ... of the city proper is 242,820 as of the 2000 census, but has declined to 231,483 according to the 2005 estimate. It also serves as the primary nucleus for a sprawling urbanization known as Greater Birmingham with 1,180,206 inhabitants constituting roughly one quarter of the state of Alabama's entire population. Birmingham was founded in 1871, just after the U.S. Civil War, as an industrial enterprise. It was named after Birmingham, the major industrial city of England. Home to a significant African American middle class, Birmingham was one of the battlegrounds of the American Civil Rights Movement throughout the 1960s.

As well as the Bullring, there is the Mailbox, which is a bit more posh and swanky, with higher prices and designer fashions to match. This was also recently opened, and is now home to the BBC West Midlands TV and Radio. As well as Bullring and the Mailbox, there were already plenty of shops around the pretty big Birmingham ... more

With this review, I am just trying to prove that Birmingham is the greatest city in Britain to live in at the moment, and inform tourists of all the things to see and do (and maybe try to boost Brum's tourism industry in the process with my glowing praise). Forget the myths about Birmingham - that it's boring, dirty and full of concrete. Forget about the brummie dialect and accent, which I have to admit I don't like, and forget about how Birmingham has more miles of canal than Venice (sorry, I had to put that in somewhere). Most of these things are completely not true, or at least unimportant and unreflective of what Birmingham really is. Birmingham is ...  Read the complete review

It’s been a while you know? Well, that was how the last conversation with my good lady finished *sigh* so what better excuse than to write samfink for the luverly folks of Dooyoo. This is, pretty much, based on an opinion posted on Ciao (hence the Ciao references) and is inspired by an ongoing debate with a prominent luminary called 29th_Candidate. 29th is a member of Dooyoo but rarely frequents these online shores these days but seeing as the good people of Ciao have suffered this mild lunacy, I thought I may as well bore you guys too. Well, it is p*ssing doon and the only viable alternative is shoving the Chrimbo decos up wiv me family or watching Arsenal play ...  Read the complete review

I am an Urbanite. Don't get me wrong I love the countryside, but there's just something about the hustle and bustle of a big city that gets me going. The bright lights, the beautiful people, pubs and clubs on every corner. I would never swap city living for an idyllic rural retreat, but listed below are a few minuses of metropolis habitation. My opinion is gleaned from years of experiences in Birmingham, but I believe the below list applies to all city centres. TALES FROM TRAMPS Whatever happened to the simple, heartfelt plea from a humble street urchin of "10p for a cup of tea guv'nor"? Did these days ever exist or ...  Read the complete review

Birmingham - not the UK one one but the one in Alabama. Not the usual sort of place that you'd visit? Think again. It's a very good spot to start a trip to America from, with interesting places all within driving distance (in USA terms!. Surrounded by rambling suburbs but once you get away from greater Birmingham you can get lost in the vast area. Don't go into the city we were told, it's too dangerous - rubbish! It is an interesting city centre and you would not believe how quiet it is and virtually traffic free. The local populace go into the centre and dissappear into their offices, shops and places of work. Walk around on the pavement (sorry, ...  Read the complete review
