Deep down south.... (Birmingham (Alabama))

Advantages: The real America. Disadvantages: Nowhere to walk in the suburbs.
Birmingham - not the UK one one but the one in Alabama. Not the usual sort of place that you'd visit? Think again. It's a very good spot to start a trip to America from, with interesting places all within driving distance (in USA terms!. Surrounded by rambling suburbs but once you get away from greater Birmingham you can get lost in the vast area. Don't go into the city we were told, it's too dangerous - rubbish! It is an interesting city centre and you would not believe how quiet it is and virtually traffic free. The local populace go into the centre and dissappear into their offices, shops and places of work. Walk around on the pavement (sorry, sidewalk) and you have it to yourself. Visit the statue of Vulcan and look out over the city and beyond. Visit the parks and shops and then go out of town to all the different malls and then take your hire car south to maybe Florida or New Orleans but see the real America first (not the America of films) and visit somewhere like Birmingham, Alabama.
