Advantages: lovely old buildings and shops

Disadvantages: hard to find them

I've just come back from the World Karting Championships in Braga, which is a city around 30 miles from Porto and is the religious capital of the country.

It's a big place, and most of it is either charmless apartment blocks and building sites. However, the old centre of the city is amazing with it's mixture of churches, municipal buildings, and modern shops and arcitectural features. It's a shame the route from the new section to the old is not well signed but we found it in the end! Road signs in Portugal look the same as the ones in the UK but they don't seem to have the ones for tourist attractions, typical ignorant Brit that I am! Beaches are around 40 miles away so if you are staying on the coast the city is worth a visit, and if you are staying in Braga vice versa.

There is a good choice of restaurants ranging from Pizza Hut and McDonalds to quite sophisticated places. I found I could easily eat well on the equivalent of £20 a day, and beer in the supermarkets was very reasonably priced.

Good review but somewhat short. I do have the pleasure of living in braga almost all weekdays and I find that ou lacked of speaking of the main monument of the city "Bom Jesus".
