BrasovNewest Review: ... the name "The Black Church" as a result of the damage done to its exterior. Many of Brasov's important buildings were badly damaged during the Second World War at which time most of the German population and all of the Jews living there left the city. Some Germans have returned and enjoy status as a protected minority according to the Romanian constitution. The buildings that we re ... more |

Picturesque Brasov is one of Romania's major cities and sits nestled in a valley where the southern and eastern Carpathians meet although as the city prospers the town is gradually creeping higher up the hillsides. Although Brasov gets a lot of visitors because of the nearby skiing resort of Poina Brasov and because of its proximity to Bran Castle with its associations with Vlad Dracul, it is a really charming and attractive city in its own right with plenty to see and do, lots of great places to eat and some really lovely accommodation. Like many towns in this part of the world the main bus station is situated on the outskirts and you need to take a taxi or ... Read the complete review

I worked in Brasov about 4 years ago and spent considerable time exploring the area. Brasov is a wonderful little city in the Transylvanian mountains, don't worry though - there are no vampires! Hell there are no scam artists these days either! Brasov is almost completely safe and the locals are truly wonderful, very friendly and helpful. The train ride to Predeal or Sinaia is truly magnificient, the hiking opportunities immediately at the top of the hill above Brasov are immense. A superb mix of architecture including the powerfully gothic Black church, the communist blocks, the new apartment blocks and villas and the old buildings in the centre give it a ... Get Your Bra’s Ov What and Where is it? A couple of weekends ago, my little family and I decided we were long overdue a holiday and opted for a short break in Dracula country, as you do. Since we live in Northern Bulgaria, a trip by car to this mysterious part of the world is actually only a day trip away. For the likes of you lot, you’ll need to get a cheap flight to Bucharest (Romania’s capital) and then either hire a car or get public transport. (Driving through Bucharest is even more horrible than driving through Bulgaria, so I would perhaps advise the latter even though I haven’t experienced it first-hand. Bucharest was a nightmare ... I sadly only spent one day in this Romanian city of two halves, but the place made a real impression on me and I'd love to go back. Brasov is easily accessible by train, overnight from Budapest being the easiest and prettiest route. The station is a bit of a way out from the beautiful old city, but taxi's are cheap to a western pocket and public transport is also available. Brasov boasts the Black Church as its principle attraction. To be honest, it's not actually that black - but is certainly worth a visit. The outside was burnt and is therefore very dark, but the inside is white and pretty. There are historical exhibits with English ... Read the complete review

Romania is beautiful throughout, but if you want to get the full impact, get yourself to the Transylvanian Alps, and feel it for yourself. Brasov is firstly, apparently a great place to base your skiing holiday. I'm no skier, so I am having to take the word of others for it, but if snow and mountains make for a good ski resort, then this has it all. The old part of Brasov town has survived the communist regime virtually intact. I bought a postcard, showing am etching of the town in the 17th century, and you can see from the top of the surrounding peaks that the layout has changed little since then. Brasov is renowned for it's part in ... Read the complete review
