Brazil

Description: Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil or República Federativa do Brasil), is the ... more
Brazil ... largest and most populous country in South America; and the fifth largest in the world in both area and population. Spanning a vast area between central South America and the Atlantic Ocean, it is the easternmost country of the Americas and borders every other South American country except Ecuador and Chile (viz. Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname) and also France (the département of French Guiana). Brazil was colonized by Portugal and it is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas. It is a multiracial country with a population composed of European, Amerindian, African and Asian elements, more often mixed in the same individual than separated into different communities. It has the largest Roman Catholic population in the world.

The rich-poor divide is a long-standing problem in Brazil, most glaringly evident in quantities of street urchins - but also in the very sick people begging for food and even whole families sleeping in doorways. * Safety Robbery is common - obviously. It shouldn't concern visitors overmuch. Those who steal ... more

Crowned Review Brazil: Everything you've heard is true - and then some! (2112 words)

It's impossible to review this vast and exciting country in two thousand words. This offering is intended to encourage your first visit and, I hope, to answer a couple of the more common questions. I lived here in the mid-Nineties, writing guide books. The Brazilians have a word, "saldades", for the poignant feeling of missing something, or someone, very badly. I still have saldades for Brazil. Literally half the South American continent, Brazil is only smaller than Russia, Canada and China. Like those countries, it has vast unpopulated areas and covers a multitude of terrains. A very 'new' country - some of the borders are still in ...  Read the complete review

Well being Brazilian i am going to comment about something that i know deeply! Its not because i am from there but its such a beautiful country that like any other has its issues but overall its an amazing country. Brazil has been discovered by Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500. Being colonized by the Portuguese brought us a lot of influences from Europe. Before the Portuguese were there , the Dutch have been there also and left their culture in the north of Brazil. Brazil has a vast mix of races because the country have been receiving a lot of different nationalities since 1860, today Brazil is the biggest Japanese Comunity outside Japan, also it has a lot ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Few times in Brazil (427 words)

So far I have been to Brazil a total of 6 times. In total I spent there more than 6 months, I have been to quite a few places and cities and I speak the local language, which is Portuguese, but with some local words and with a different accent and intonation than in Portugal and I love their music and off course, I am also an admirer of their women. I normally fly either to Sao Paolo or to Rio. Flights to Sao Paolo from LONDON CAN BE BOUGHT FOR LESS THAN 400 POUNDS FOR A RETURN TICKET, UNFORTUNATELY taxes seem to take more and more of the cost of the ticket. I also flew to Brazil from Madrid on a couple of times. Going to Brazil is always ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Is there a more diverse country? (1360 words)

Leaving UK soil at 6am on the 30th of June, I was prepared to arrive in Porto Alegre, Brazil 22 hours later. However, a delayed flight meant I missed the last connecting flight of the day from Rio de Janeiro. Fortunately, I was put up in a very posh hotel in the airport, where the waiter was convinced I was prince William! My first impression when finally arriving in Porto Alegre, the south's capital city at 12am local time, was of a rundown America. It seemed everything had been touched by the American influence - from the traffic lights and overhead electricity transformers to the drive through banks (and of course McDonalds). The City?s infrastructure ...  Read the complete review
