You have Malaysia surrounding it from east and west and Indonesia Borneo to the south and it's just outclassed in everyway. Brunei is going to run out of oil within the next decade or so, so they have to find an alternative source of income, and quick. Maybe tourism is the answer? But you have to ask, how ... more |

Brunei is essentially just a tiny oil state inbetween Sabah and Sarawak. It's hard to find words to write about the place as aside from the Royal Palaces and the Oma Ali Mosque, there is not an awful lot to do... Thinking about it, that is an understatement! Even alcohol is illegal here. Tembouroung Nation Park is supposedly okay, but I never got here due to the insane prices being quoted for treks there (about the equivalent of £220 for 3 nights). What is the point when Sabah or Sarawak surround the tiny country from East and West? And at about 1/6 of the price! Accommodation is awful value. It's about 15 quid for a single, ... Why would anyone want to go to Brunei when Malaysia is next door? The country is the same, the jungle is just about the same, the water villages are the same, the people are the same. The only differences are that Brunei costs at least ten times as much as Malaysia, is less interesting in terms of things to do and see .... and it's dry, so no beers or sundowners. The only thing you could do in Brunei which you can't to in Malaysia is go Royal Family or Palace Spotting, but then not many tourists want to do that.
