Community and the Flemish Region) and of the French Community of Belgium, and as it is the headquarters of most of the European Union's institutions, is considered the de facto capital of Europe. Brussels is the capital city, in the centre of Belgium, and also the largest municipality of the Brussels-Capital Region. This municipality inside Brussels is correctly named The City of Brussels (French: Bruxelles-Ville or Ville de Bruxelles, Dutch: Stad Brussel), which is one of 19 municipalities that make up the Brussels-Capital Region (see also: Municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region), with a total population of 1,018,804 inhabitants (1 January 2006). The municipality has a population of about 140,000. The Metropolitan area has about 2,090,000 inhabitants.

Why Brussels and more generally Belgium has a reputation for being boring is beyond me. I stayed a couple of days in Brussels last summer and had a great time. I'm not sure what's not to like in Brussels, they have great beer, great chocolate and it's a beautiful city with loads of attractions. My only regret was that wasn't able to stay longer. I travelled to Brussels on the Eurostar which was a hassle free pleasure that I would heartily recommend (if you can get a cheap ticket). It seems an odd thing to review but here goes. What can you say about Brussels airport? If you are flying to Brussels you will find the runway conveniently placed under the wheels of the aircraft as it lands. On taking off the runway is conveniently flat. At night the runways have lights to aid the pilots landing. But it is hardly product differentiation is it. The thing about Brussels airport is that it must be the biggest and busiest airport which relies on one terminal. What this means if you have to get a connection at Brussels, and particularly if you have to change airlines, be prepared for a walk that would make some polar explorers flinch. The walk is ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Brussels: Like a vegetable...but not. (2609 words)

Coming, as I occasionally do, from London, I have to confess to having had in the past a somewhat prejudiced view of Brussels. This view, based mostly on the eponymous vegetable and a few news report backdrops, was never going to be accurate. I'm grown-up enough to admit that in my heart of hearts I knew this to be the case, but did nothing to address the problem, even when I discovered that I was scheduled to visit the Belgian capital in the course of what I laughingly call my 'work'. I did no homework prior to visiting Brussels, other than to briefly scan a few reviews here on Ciao. Naturally, my eye was drawn to the writings of my good friend ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review A bite into Brussels (2732 words)

Although Brussels is the capital of Europe, it's often overlooked as a city break location due to it being sandwiched between its more famous neighbours, Paris and Amsterdam. Having lived and worked in Brussels for a year as a student, I have a rather fond regard for the place. I'll freely admit that it has not got as many well known attractions nor the je ne sais quoi of Paris. Indeed, neither has it got the same canal like prettiness or red light risquéness of Amsterdam. However, Brussels has a quaint charm all of its own, superb architecture and buildings, and let's not forget all that gorgeous chocolate and beer. ***SPEAKING THEIR LANGUAGE*** Belgium ...  Read the complete review

Question What does one do when you want to celebrate finishing the taught part of a Masters degree and want to go away but are so broke even the cheapest trip to Spain ids not an option Answer. Book a very cheap flight for a mini break to Brussels, the capital of Belgium.I did this week and I had a great time. I flew with Ryan Air from John Lennon Airport in Liverpool to Charleroi airport in Brussels. Or so I thought it was in Brussels. It was near enough an hour from the airport to Midi railway station. The bus connecting bus is a rip off at 10 euros. Since there were four of us on the way there we took a taxi that costed 35 euros (luckily we had ...  Read the complete review
