Advantages: Great Mussels
Disadvantages: Could be a bit short on choices of things to do
Brussels is not exactly one of the more glamourous capitals of Europe, but it certainly has its own specialty and attractions. I was hugely impressed by the number of food stalls and the competition offered by the various restaurants around Grand Place. These restaurants offer a range of food stuff, but mussels seem to be one of its main attractions. I tried the mussels moulinaire and found it absolutely addictive. Make sure you walk along the whole street before you make a choice on where to eat by comparing the price and how the place looks from the outside. The front is generally an open space so you can look inside fairly easily. I tend to look for the place with most people but you find that very difficult because most places are just filled with crowds. The Belgians must really love dining out. However, Brussels is not just mussels. Their two most famous monuments is the Manneken-Pis and the Atomium. Manneken-Pis is a statue of a urinating boy. Don't expect a super large statue though. I was shocked when I saw that it was quite a small statue dressed in Elvis clothes( I think they change his attire from time to time). And if you feel up to a walk, you can take what is known as the comic-strip route which begins at the SleepWell hostel. The comic strip route takes you through cartoon murals painted by famous artist such as Herge(TinTin). It is definitely a place worth going especially if you are planning a rather short vacation.
