Since the fall of the "Iron Curtain", several of the eastern European capitals have become popular tourist destinations. Unlike, say, Prague, Tallinn or Budapest, the Romanian capital, Bucharest, has not enjoyed so much interest. There are, perhaps, three reasons that Bucharest has not caught the imagination of travellers in the same way as those cities. The first must be due to the reputation the city has as a dangerous crime-ridden place; certainly, television documentaries showing children living in underground stations and openly sniffing glue on the streets can not have done anything positive for the city's image. I went to Bucharest from September 17th 2002 til September 24th 2002 because I had a nervous breakdown and had to get the hell out of Dodge. I was in Jail because my wife is divorcing me again and I imagine any sensible woman (or stupid one) for that matter gets her man locked up long enough to clean out the bank accounts. I get out of jail and my first day back at work and I make an abstract painting with some suicidal bloke on the nose of my locomotive. So I used all my frequent flier miles and got a ticket for Bucharest at 7am and was on a plane at 11am. I had no idea where I would go or stay or anything like that. I have relatives in Romania and so have spent a lot of time visiting and holidaying there. The most important point for me is to clear up that it is not as bad as people all seem to think it is, I have been back time and time again and that is because I actually wanted to and for no other reason! I have spent most of my time in Bucharest the capital, although I have to say that Romania on the whole has so much to offer, it has fantastic beach resorts, accompanied with brilliant weather in the summer at the Black sea resorts(about 4/5 hours drive by car from Bucharest).
