How can I attempt to sum up the unique qualities of a city like Cairo within the confines of a short review? Well the answer is I can't, not to the degree that I would like, but if this brief snap shot gives you some idea of the glorious diversity of this wonderful city then that is a worthy enough goal. It is a city that sits with one foot in the ...

Once again I went travelling in 2001 as part of a charity group. This meant that I was able to see a little more than the average tourist does of the real Cairo and that area. Although I feel sure we only scratched the surface of life out there this is what I experienced. Attached to Cairo are three 'villages' Mottamdia, Macattum ...

Think of Egypt and it conjurs up an image of the Great Pyramids. A spectacular testament to the ability of mankind. Steeped in history, they are the most revered and recognized Wonder of the Ancient World and have for centuries baffled countless numbers of tourists, archaeologists and scientists courtesy of their sheer being. ...

I travelled to Egypt with a company called Explore Worldwide who specialise in what they call "small group exploratory holidays". They are perfect for those travelling alone, as I was, or for those on a budget or for anyone who wants to go off the beaten track but still have some back-up in the form of a guide and a group of fellow ...

I spent 2 weeks working in this extraordinary city recently, and as soon as I arrived I found that any preconceptions I might have had were blown away. I imagined Cairo to be small-ish - it's enormous (home to 17m people). I thought it might be hostile and dangerous - it was heartwarmingly friendly. And I thought it would be a ...

This little world, the Great Cairo... the most admirable and the greatest city seen upon this earth... the Microcosmus of the greater world... William Lithgow,1614 and from my point of view, a great place for a holiday, a great amount of very interesting culture, and a place to stay lucky... On my first morning, desperately ...

Four years ago I visited a friend who was working in Cairo. I was generously allotted a company employee (Cairo born & bred) for the duration. He acted as guide, taxi driver and minder. The following are my lasting impressions. The city is filthy not only with dust but also car fumes from the often grid locked roads. The noise from ...

In 1997 I was lucky enough to win 2 tickets to fly on Concorde (see my dooyoo opinion) to Cairo for a long weekend. As I had never ventured further than Paris it was certainly a wonderful weekend to remember. I was one of 100 people on Concorde and the whole weekend was a whirl of activity. We started at the ornate Mosque of Mohammed Ali, a ...

A teeming city that sprawls around the Nile, Cairo is bursting with vitality and is an amazing mix of religions. It is the largest city in Africa and the Arab world. This is a fantastic city but beware outside Mosques, as I had been told to cover up, which I did except my legs from the knee down. Outside a Mosque this crowd appeared and ...

Don't go to Cairo on a tour, would be my advice. You'll see all the big sights but never really get a feel for what the city is like. We were taken to a huge mosque, and then to a market. We saw the Egyptian Museum and the Pyramids, went down the Nile blah blah blah. I would advise you to skip the coach, and brave a few taxis instead, walk ...

We'd had an amazing holiday in Luxor on the Nile (another story)and were in the departure lounge at Cairo Airport. Compared with the faded grandeur of much of the City, the airport was brand, spanking new. I needed the Ladies Cloakroom, and was delighted at the opulence and cleanliness in there. There was no toilet paper so I asked the ...

If in Cairo I throughly recomend the Winsor Hotel as fetured in Around The World In 80 Days with Michael Palin. The Windsor is an ex British officers mess & still stuck firmly in the 20-30's the facade is dirty the paint is peeling but what a welcome, nothing was to much trouble for the staff who seemed to remember all their guests ...
