Advantages: lots to do, hot, friendly locals
Disadvantages: pricey, endless tipping
On 20 April 2002 I was lucky enough to marry a beautiful woman named Jo. cancun was to be our honeymoon destination and naturally it was something I had been looking forward to for ages. The flight lasted 10 hours, we were in a bank of three seats. I was sandwiched inbetween my new wife and a smelly woman of the scottish persuasion. After landing in Cancun we had to queue for an hour to get a visa, then another hour to find our bags and then another hour to get them searched (atleast thats how it seemed). Finally we left the airport and were greeted by a young boy who grabbed our cases and took them 5 metres down the road to our coach. For this small errand he wanted a sizeable tip. Then on the coach we could buy beers for 5 dollars and were encouraged to heavily tip the driver. This was my first experience of hardcore tipping and woyuld not be the first on this trip. Cancun it self is a purpose built resoprt in the shape of a number 7. There is only 1 main road on the strip called the Boulevard Kulkucan. The Airport is roughly at the bottom of the 7. As you up there is a lagoon on your left (populated by Crocodiles) and on the right the Caribbean Sea. Our Hotel was the Costa Real, which is a fantastic hotel offering some good food. My particular favourite was texan night where there was a good selction of meats and sauces. GETTING ABOUT CANCUN - The strip is 14 miles long and so it wouldn't be a good idea to walk everywhere. In general the buses are excellent and by far the best way to get around. they're cheap and frequent and at night you ofyten get localsplaying guitars - which is always a bonus. Taxis can be v.expensive and is always a good idea to agree the fare beforehand. SHOPPING - There are many good malls in Cancun, but they do tend to be on the expensive side. Silve, howver, is the resorts speciality and is good value. The flea markets offer good value, but can be very ann
oying as the proprierters like the hard sell tactics. Many a time we were asked if we wanted tatoos and the like. SIGHTS - This part of Mexico is where the ancient mayan civilaization came from and there are many archealogical sites of interest. By far the best is the Chichen Itza. Tulum is also worth a look. Other sights include Xel-Ha which is a natural lagoon - which in my opinion is as close to paradise as I have ever been. Cancun itself boasts many scuba diving facilities and a wet and wild water park which provided us with endless fund EATING OUT - Very Expensive. be prepared to spend £80 on a meal for two before you have to tip (including tipping the guy who gives out paper towels int he toilet). Senor Frogs is full of blatant commercialism - so much so I have adaopted the restaurant into my own slang. Senor frogging meaning to fleece money out of unsuspecting tourists. On the uopside thew Outback Steakhouse sells the best steaks in the world (be sure to try the chiops and cheese things). I know much of this sounds negative andfor that I'm sorry. I suppose I'm one of natures moaners. All in all I would honestly recommend this holiday to anyone. Its just that I would advise them to take plenty of money with them.
