Newest Review: ... for being the first location for all the stars to stay in at the internationally know Cannes Film Festival. At this point, my crepe was about to live up its name so I took the opportunity to powder my nose in the very plush toilets of this very luxurious hotel. I share spare the details of the experience but will tell you that in humble hertfordshire ways I have never come accross such a wonder...... it only just stops short of wiping your derrierre. Refreshed, i continued along the promenade with its curious mx of leathery old gucci clad locals stereotypically clutching their lap/rat dogs and the slitghter redder tourists from every ... more

Funzo's Fantastical French Follying Adventures had to take in Cannes. Driving along the south coast after a dissapointed day in the overcrowded, far too English resort of Nice, Cannes seemed an ideal box to tick and the 40ft Motorhome trundled laboriously along the picturesque if not scary coastal road that can take you from Monaco to Marseille with the sea never leaving your eyeline. The traffc to and from Cannes was about as busy as we had seen over the few weeks and the glaring neon of the place can be seen for miles. Parking proved to be a pain and just about all car parks had barriers on preventing motorhomes and campers from parking up. No quiet ports ...  Read the complete review

i was lucky enough to come on expenses - so i couldn't help but wonder what i'd have made of the place if i was travelling on my own money. the short answer is 'not much'. everything's expensive and you're left wondering why. architecurally there's not much to shout about - the carlton hotel is impressive, the majestic (where i stayed) has a fading glory (the carpets are threadbare - but the food is fantastic) and the rest of the town is built in typical 1970s bomb shelter mode. the food is fantastic, again if you're on expenses. don't expect to eat decently for less than 50 euros per head. apart from that, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Cannes: Must Visit Isles Des Lerins! (338 words)

A fifteen minute ferry ride from Cannes are two beautiful pine covered islands. After spending a few days in Cannes itself, it is a good idea to have a relaxing day on the islands. On the larger of the two islands (St. Marguerite as I remember), there is a large fortress, where Louis XVI held the notorious Man in the Iron Mask. The fortress is quite picturesque, even if it is slightly dilapidated. Also on the island is an excellent museum of Mediterranean archaeology (finds from ancient sunken ships et cetera). But the best part is the time spent strolling around the islands wooded paths, which periodically emerge onto small, empty beaches (ideal for a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Cannes or Can't (161 words)

I was lucky enough to be able to visit Cannes once again this year (2000) and I must say that the lazy Med lifestyle just overwhelms you in the lower end nearest Nice but matched with the busy streets in the commercial end it is a town of comparison. A light lunch in one of it's many cafe's and bars facing the sea, or a burger at planet hollywood just down from Macdonalds is one of it's many delights. Shopping is also a must in Cannes, but if your like me you will have to just put up with looking in the windows of places such as Christian Dior, and Yves St Laurant. With the excellent train service along the Cote d'Azur there is ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Cannes: Graveyard of the faded starlets (416 words)

Walking down the Croisette in Cannes - which incidently is the famous promonade you always see when they show the film festival on TV - is a bit like wondering into some faded 1970's film about international espionage, luxuary hotels, car chases involving bizarre European models no one in England ever saw outside the movies and most importantly some beautiful and sadly unobtainable people. The sad thing is that the celulose may be faded but the beautiful people are now the beautiful people's grandparents - walking down that georgeous prominade you get the distinct feeling that nothing has changed except the people are a lot lot older. There are just so ...  Read the complete review
