Advantages: A Beautiful Place To visit
Disadvantages: None
We booked a day trip to Capri with a representative from our hotel (we were staying at the Excelsior Vittoria hotel) in Sorrento this cost us £50.00 per person. We got the hydrofoil from the marina Piccolo which takes about fifteen minutes. As we approached Capri I was amazed at the awe inspiring view of elegant brightly coloured buildings and sub-tropical vegetation.
Anacapri
We caught a minibus to Anacapri which is the island's second(Ana-means other), quieter town, with lovely white houses halfway up the slopes of Monte Solaro(which is the highest point on Capri), one of the highlights for me was the scenic chairlift from Piazza Vittoria. A bit like a ski lift but higher up, two Italian men help you on, you sort of stand there and get on the chair whilst it's still moving(slowly). You don't have a belt but a bar goes across the front of the chair(at certain points you are very high up some people could find this scary). I loved it, it was exilarating. The views from the chairlift were amazing. Chairlift takes you to the top of Monte Solaro, there is a lovely little cafe at the top were you can purchase food and drink.
Coming down on the chairlift I heard lots of noise and a wailing sound, as I got closer I realised it was a well built lady who was rocking from side to side in her chair and shouting "Bruno Bruno I afraid get me down". Well this was so funny I couldn't stop laughing and nearly fell out of my chair lift(everybody else seemed to be laughing too). I still feel guilty about laughing so much and wonder how that poor lady got down.
Capri Town
Dominating th eastern side of the island, the capital has at it's centre one of the mediterraneans most fashionable meeting places, Piazza Umberto1, better known as the Piazzeta, more courtyard than square. We sat at a cafe looking across at the clock tower and the quaint baroque Santo Stefano church. The town offers an escape from the madding crowds just two minutes away, in it's maze of little arcaded lanes. Here I got chance to practise my limited Italian at a Cafe/restaurant
di vino bianco
Pronounced dee vee'no bee'ankoh
Two glasses of white wine
Paga il mio amico
Pronounced pag'ah eel mee'oh am'ee'co
please my friend is paying
This got a laugh and two very large glasses of chilled white wine, the wine was dry and refreshing. The waiter also brought a large bowl of black olives, a bowl of green olives and a bowl of salted biscuits(a bit like pretzels). This cost about £10 but they were large glasses of wine. We sat for half an hour and relaxed. Capri's little Piazzetta is one of th best-known squares in Italy and is a must for people-watching.
Parco Augosto. The Gardens Of The Emperor Augustus
The gardens of the Emperor Augustus offer splendid views over the Certosa di San Giacomo the harbour of Marina Piccola and the great Faragliona rocks out in the bay. It was a clear sunny day when we were there and the views were breathtaking.
There was a lot more we wished we could have seen but we ran out of time and we had to dash to catch funicular railway back down to the harbour. Maybe next time we will get chance to visit Blue Grotto and Villa Jovis and of course the chairlift again.
Thank you for reading. This review is also posted on Ciao with photographs.
