CaracasNewest Review: ... to stay interested after only a couple of days. The risk of crime is very real, Caracas reputedly being amongst the most dangerous cities in the world. There are the usual risks of pickpocketing and theft but often these take the form of heavily armed robberies which can get violent. The police are notoriously corrupt and are unlikely to aid a tourist, but may well be involved in the robbery itself. After dark as a solo woman traveller I felt like I was confined to my hotel. Caracas is a sprawling and unattractive urban wasteland with little to redeem it unless you have a particular interest in Latin American politics and are travelling less for tourist purposes than political ones. To start with the positives, Caracas does have a pretty setting near the coast and surrounded by lush green mountain peaks and the climate is warm and inviting. The city also has some important historical sights and Plaza Bolivar is a pleasant enough place to hang-out in, visit the cathedral containing the tomb of the grand Bolivar himself.
