As I sat in the dappled shade outside my tent and gazed across at the craggy corniche of the Causse Méjean to the north and to a more typically wooded Cévennol slope to the west, I wondered why I was writing this review. The sky was a limpid blue. The woodlands were mottled in contrasting shades of beech, pine and chestnut green, the meadows ablaze with a thousand varieties of wild flower. Their scent, and that of clover, lingered in the air. From the village half a mile away the bells of the two churches, which every hour intoned their competing versions of the time, suddenly burst into united song. No other sound intrudes. The ...
