Charleston ... the county seat and largest city of Charleston County. The city was founded as Charlestown or Charles Towne, Carolina in 1670, and moved to its present location in 1680. Up until 1800, Charleston was the fifth largest city in North America, behind Philadelphia, New York City, Boston, and Quebec City. It adopted its present name in 1783. Also known as The Holy City (due to the prominence of churches on the low-rise cityscape, particularly the numerous steeples which dot the city's skyline), Charleston brims with the culturally unique, such as the joggling board.

I live in Summerville which is about 20 miles from Charleston. I have lived here for about 10 years. It fascinates me that one weekend a month, my husband and I can play tourists in our own town and we have yet to see everything. There are so many things to see and do in Charleston that you could visit every year and never see all to see. The SC Aquarium recently opened in downtown Charleston and it is the best sight to see. Charleston is a lovely place. We stayed in Historic Charleston which is the touristy part of the town. This area is very compact and therefore easy to navigate. One word of warning – walk, don’t drive. The place is easy to walk around and you see a lot of great sights. If you drive you will be confronted by the large numbers of cars, buses etc and the one way streets, of which there are lots. You will see so much more on foot. There are lots of things to see and do here and that is without venturing into your car and going out of Charleston. Shopping. There are lots of shops, both “normal” and touristy. King Street is one ...  Read the complete review

Having lived here until I was 12 years old I have loved the place since the first time I could look around and remember a place. Charleston is a place full of warmth and hospitality. People are always friendly and there is always a smile on the local’s lips. Charleston is situated on the coast of South Carolina and has warm temperatures up to 100 degree's F in the summer and does not get much colder then 40-50 degrees F in the winter. Charleston is a great place to visit for the local history and the beauty of the state. Just walking down the Battery you are able to see houses built over a hundred years ago with magnificent gardens in them. ...  Read the complete review

Charleston is on the coast of South Carolina. It is a town which is dominated by it’s past and almost everything seems to be perfectly preserved. The downtown area is compact with narrow streets which are easy to navigate. We took a horse-drawn tour of the city to give us a feel for the place and I can highly recommend this. This covers all the major historic sites, gave us some background information on some of the previous inhabitants and also gave us tips on places to eat, shop etc. We were then able to explore ourselves and go back to some of the areas covered on the tour for a closer look. Many of the preserved houses are open to the public. For anyone ...  Read the complete review
