ChicagoNewest Review: ... fields of Ohio rolling by, and have always been captivated by the first glimpse of Chicago's skyline. The southern approaches to the city are not pretty: heavy industry, ugly lake front casinos and deprived south side neighbourhoods don't sell the city, but they do tell a slice of its remarkable history. Nothing builds the excitement of Chicago like this train does for me, and if there is one ... more |

The sheer enormity of Chicago makes this a difficult review to write. I can only hope to think of the great DooYoo reviews that offer some personal insight to the subject, so forgive me if this is not so much of a helpful travel guide as a series of unrelated recommendations for a briefly adopted Chicagoan! In that respect I strongly recommend the Lonely Planet and Time Out guides to the city, and also the immense amount of user-generated information on the Chicago pages of Wikitravel: http://wikitravel.org/en/Chicago There's so much there in fact, that Chicago was one of the first Wikitravel destinations to be developed into a printed book ... As I child I always wanted to travel to Chicago, the fact that I had family living their, which I hadn’t seen in over 10 years made it even easier to go their. Having only two weeks in Chicago, I made the most of it, viewing all the big tourist attractions, whilst also seeing the smaller more unseen sides of the Windy City, such as the local museums, libraries, jazz bars, the attractions, which aren’t usually advertised in the holiday brochures. This review will only cover my experiences of Chicago, I will try to explain as much as I can, but hopefully this will give readers an informative and different perspective of Chicago. Brief ... As a regular business traveller there is one question which invariably arises when talking with colleagues - why isn't Chicago more popular with British tourists? Walk the streets of Boston or New York and you are struck by the frequency with which you hear British accents and pass by your fellow countymen struggling under a mountain of shopping bags. Yet arrive in Chicago and the situation is completely different. Why? Surely it can't be the flight time - at around 8 hours it is only an hour further from London than New York. Perhaps the shopping then? Probably not. The 'Magnificent Mile' - a section of Michigan Avenue north of the river has some ... Read the complete review

Chicago's not a bad spot to spend a few weeks, which is just as well, because I found myself positioned there for training with my new job for nine weeks. While we weren't based in the center of the city, we did spend a large amount of time there both sightseeing and socialising. Chicago is serviced by two airports: O'Hare (the big, famous one) and Midway (the one no-one's heard of). They're both located quite close to the city centre (close by American standards, that is) and getting to and from either airport is easy. Travel to and from the suburbs is done via Metra trains (http://www.metrarail.com) into Chicago Union Station and at the time of ... Read the complete review

At the moment I vacation every 2 weeks. It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it, and last Thursday I took off to Chicago for a few days in the Windy city. I knew of Chicago of course, but I didn't know much about the place, so I booked my trip on the assumption that a big city would have stuff to do, and I would find out what that stuff was when I arrived. Even though I was arriving from just a few states over, I flew in to O'Hare which is the more international of the 2 airports (Midway, the other, usually serves domestic flights). Getting from either airport to the city is not hard as public transport links are available at both. $1.60 and 45 ... Read the complete review
