Cinque Terre ... the sea. Five little villages are built into the rocks between the beach and the hills. The Cinque Terre are five coastal villages in the province of La Spezia in the Liguria region of Italy. "Discovered" by foreigners in the late 20th century, they have come to be among the most popular areas of Italy among tourists. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all encapsulated in a national park by the same name. The Cinque Terre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When I started to plan my trip around Italy I kept finding references to an area called Cinque Terre. Curiosity got the better of me and I started to research what Cinque Terre was actually like. The name literally means five lands. Twelve miles of very rocky shoreline weaves its way along the top left hand of Italy in the Ligurian coast just west of La Spezia (Top left of the boot). The coastline is punctuated with five small villages, Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, which make up the area called Cinque Terre.
