Clearwater in particular is a non-place: by this I mean that it has no real identity, no real distinguishing features, it isn't even tacky enough to be memorable for that. Even the beach isn't ugly enough to be memorable, it just is a beach and that's it. If you want a break from Central Florida and want to head to the beach, there are plenty of nicer beaches both on the Gulf or Pacific sides, most of those have been the subject of other opinions. Daytona and Clearwater Beaches are firmly stuck in the mind as student hangouts. Unfortunately lots of UK tour operators feature both destinations but do not tell you what a waste of time it is to go to either, but mainly Clearwater. I have been to both beaches frequently and I must say they are boring, they lack soul and are not even pretty. They are just vast expanses of sand with the sea somewhere out there. I have just returned from my first ever trip to Florida. Together with my husband, I spent two weeks in Clearwater on the Gulf Coast. Clearwater is the largest of the Gulf Coast resorts with one of the finest, quietist beaches. The sand is like white sugar, the sea is warm and blue and together with the plentiful palm trees, the scene is like that of a picture postcard. Before I left for Florida, I had read with interest an opinion on Clearwater by dooyoo member jeanjeannie, and wondered whether we too would be lucky enough to see pelicans diving for their breakfasts.
