Situated in the centre of Portugal, Coimbra (pronounced phonetically as qwim-brar) is a picturesque university town steeped in history. It was previously the capital of Portugal prior to Lisboa and had the first university in the country. It dominates the skyline on top of a steep hill on one bank of the river, which cuts through the center of the city. Coimbra is flanked on the east side by steep hills, which rise almost immediately off the bank of the river.
