Advantages: Extremely relaxing
Disadvantages: Not all mod cons
With some travellers checks left over from a previous holiday me and my partner decided to browse the Internet for any late deals. We found one at a reasonable price; the tour operator was Priceright. We both thought it might be a bit dodgy, we had visions of flying on a biplane and staying in tumble down apartments, but went for it anyway, after all it was only a week. The day of departure came, and we duly arrived at Manchester airport for our flight, the worry started, the flight was delayed or re-scheduled, but only by an hour or so. We were flying "Sabre" (never heard of them). However the plane was a reasonably clean Boeing 737, it even had in-flight entertainment, and the usual package holiday flight meal etc. but it was OK. The arrival. Corfu airport is only small, but even arriving at 3:00 am their time the passage through the arrivals didn't take long and before we new it we were on the air conditioned transfer coach to our self catering apartments at Dassia, about 5 miles north of Corfu Town, arriving just as the sky was getting light in the east. Our apartment, Gregoris Villasis, was fairly basic but really clean, it had a good size fridge and ice box, a two burner gas cooker. The shower room had the usual toilet, basin, shower, but no shower curtain or screen, but this is par for the course in Greece. No hot water in the mornings because it is heated by solar panels. The apartment building consisted of four apps up and four down, we were up. The balcony was common for the four apps, this was excellent, it was great to be able to return after a hard slog sunbathing and snorkelling to relax with an ice cold beer on the balcony and chat with the other folks about the day. This proved useful for pooling info about the island, what to see, where to go etc. We hired a car for a couple of days and went across to the other side of the island, Paleokastritsa, very scenic, with the intention of snorkelling, the water on th
e west side of the island all though extremely clear is somewhat colder than the east side. The beaches around the island seem to alternate between sandy and pebbly. East side beaches are safe family bathing with a gently sloping sandy bottom. Dassia has got some nice restaurants but lacks the club type night life, Two miles further north is Ipsos, this is a more lively place with good beach front bars and clubs. We took a boat trip for a ride up the coast to Kassiopi, another lively holiday town, on route stopping for the b-b-q and on the return trip stopping for a dip in a crystal clear bay and again for swim into the sea cave. For an evening excursion, Thursday I think, we took the local bus for late shopping in Corfu Town, when there, you must visit the Liston, anybody who is anybody hangs at the Liston. There are other places to see in Corfu Town but we were happy to sit at one of the bars, sip cool beers and watch the tourists and locals go by. (When in Rome) All in, our week in Corfu was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience, and I would recommend it to anyone.
