Most of Bolivia is too hot or too cold so the little town of Coroico is a bit of paradise for the tired traveller. The most popular backpacker hotels boast swimming pools and decks where you can lounge around and do nothing for days on end. Getting there is another story. The bus journey down has been described by another writer so I won't comment on that except to point out that it is the only bus ride I know of where the bus stops to be blessed and to make an offering to Pachamama, the earth mother before starting on the descent. Fear, sweat, wanting to wet yourself, life passing before your eyes- yup it's all there on the infamous road from La Paz to coroicco. I went to Italy recently, and passed along this road that was suppossed to be quite dangerous with a 300 foot drop of the edge. Pah, a walk in the park, a piece of piss compared to the road to Coroicco. The journey starts on the upper out skirts of La Paz. Firstly as with all things South American the bus was 3 hours late and when it did turn up the driver informed us ( a group of about 4 gringo's and 35 Bolivians) that he was going to have a drink in the local bar so we would have to wait.
