Newest Review: ... with bags of taste. The other wasn't a local but came from the Basque region, called Le Petit Basque. Delicious. We ate tons of this and brought a whole one home with us. The local Corsican wine is outstanding. They specialise in Rose and we never had a bad one. Indeed,we didn't find an indifferent let alone a bad Corsican wine of any type, White, Rose or Red. In fact, one Red that we found was so good we brought back as many bottles as we could carry. Called Terra Nostra (Our Land ? a good patriotic name if ever there was), this 12.5% abv. wine is made from the local Niellucciu grape. This worked out at about £2 a bottl... more

Crowned Review Corsica: We had a great time... of Corse (4912 words)

Both the kids (can you still call them kids at 21 and 23?) have finally finished at University. Actually, my son finished last year and has been living and working in Manchester since then. My daughter has just completed her Photographic Art degree course at Newport, graduating with a 2:1, the same credit that my son got for Computer Science at UMIST. She was chuffed about that. She desperately wanted to do at least as well as him. We needed a break. Would they want to come with us? Well, yes, they would, especially if Dad was paying! My son has never really been a party animal. His job is very stressful and so all he wanted to do was chill out in the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The mediterranean how it should be (281 words)

We've just returned from a two-week, two centre, holiday in Corsica booked through Corsican Places and I have to say that Corsica, or at least the places where we stayed in Corsica, makes a fantastic destination - as long as you don't want 'English Pubs' and McDonald's. To me, this is how the mediterranean countries should be, beautiful countryside and beaches, crystal clear seas, and totally unsullied by the crassness of trying to cope with hoards of tourists crying out for pints of bitter and fish fingers and chips. We flew into Calvi with Astraeus Airlines and after a hair raising drive over the mountains, spent a week near St ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Corsica - The Napoleonic Island with so much to offer (259 words)

I visited Corsica as part of a cruise holiday three weeks ago. It was one of the gems of the many countries I visited during my time at sea. It had distinct french flair which was refreshing after visiting so many dirty and graffiti-ridden Italian resorts such as Naples. There are many shops and cafes on Corsica, particularly in the island's capital, Ajaccio. However the price of snacks can vary, for example an Ice Cream in one Glace Cafe was 19f (£1.90) whereas in one cafe further down the street the same ice cream was priced at 10f (£1.00). Trivial, I know, but it does pay to shop around - even for the smallest items or snacks. The usual traders ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review HOT, DRY AND FABULOUS! (476 words)

I just spent 8 blissful days in Corsica. I knew nothing about this island except for its approximate location before arriving. The ferry from Nice normally takes 4 hours but the speedy one was out of service when we arrived so it turned into a 7 ½ hour journey. Apparently this happens often and is expensive so fly if you can! We stayed in a camping area called Galina Varja in a small town in the south called Sotta. The property consists mostly of small cabins or chalets (very small and only meant for sleeping). You can also stay in a tent that is put up for you if you prefer. Sheets, pillows and blankets are included and it is very comfortable. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Corsica - Island of contrasts (446 words)
by - written on 05/07/00 (Very useful, 371 readings)

Napoleon was born here, Nelson did battle off the coast, this Island has a colourful history and very patriotic people with a desire for independence. From the moment you step off the plane, the strong heady scent of the maquis hits you. This is an Island of contrasts, hair-pin mountain bends, rocky coves, glorious beaches, fortresses, ancient citadels, boules in the square. It is popular with both the cruise and yachting sets. Calvi in the north has a truly wonderful crescent shaped beach, which offers safe shallow bathing and is ideal for kids. The town has an old citadel where many artists and crafts people live and work. This is a good place to find that holiday ...  Read the complete review
