Advantages: Not a drop of rain in the summer...

Disadvantages: Deadly hairpin turns on the roads

I just spent 8 blissful days in Corsica. I knew nothing about this island except for its approximate location before arriving.

The ferry from Nice normally takes 4 hours but the speedy one was out of service when we arrived so it turned into a 7 ˝ hour journey. Apparently this happens often and is expensive so fly if you can!

We stayed in a camping area called Galina Varja in a small town in the south called Sotta. The property consists mostly of small cabins or chalets (very small and only meant for sleeping). You can also stay in a tent that is put up for you if you prefer. Sheets, pillows and blankets are included and it is very comfortable. This place is a find and a half! The all-inclusive cost (excluding alcohol) is about 25 pounds per person. That means a French breakfast with bread, butter and jams, a buffet lunch that was delicious made up of loads of different salads, meats, fruit and cheese and dinner was served at the table (all the guests eat together if you wish) and was delicious every night with as much Rosé wine you could drink. If you are out for a full day, you can request a picnic the night before and they’ll have it ready for you in the morning. They offer great deals on rental cars and many other activities as well.

There are many activities to occupy your time if you wish. The scuba diving was good, but not a lot to see if you are used to tropical waters as I am. The beaches are beautiful with white sand and the colour of the sea reminded me of the Caribbean! There is horseback riding, cycling, hiking, sailing, windsurfing and the list goes on.

The villages in the south of the island are a treat to explore. A real ancient Mediterranean feel! Spend an afternoon sipping a Café au lait and people watching!

Bonifacio is a must! It is the southernmost point of the island and is spectacular! The white cliffs and blue sea create an incredible view. There is a ferry here that takes
you to Sardinia (Italy). You can then stroll through the winding little streets, shopping or eating your way through!

I must add that it is worthwhile to rent a car unless you arrive with your own. There is no other simple way to get around! It is also useful to speak a bit of French. The Corsicans are very proud people and consider themselves independent. Not a whole lot of English is spoken but you can get by with a smile.

Corsica is not the cheapest place in France but with the pound being strong, I found it very affordable and the SUN SHINES ALL SUMMER!!!
