Advantages: Friendly and sunny

Disadvantages: expensive to self cater

If you want to stay on a hot rock, Cyprus is the place for you. Expensive to self cater, with only corner shops, it is cheaper to eat out, or stay at a hotel. Transport is cheap, with one-price tickets, and reasonable car / bike hire. The West of the island is the place to go for visiting sites of historical interest, and the East is pretty and less developed. Cruises to Egypt are widely offered, but be warned, that they are a whistle stop tour, and involve a three hour coach trip each way, from Port Said. A much better deal for these cruises can be had from the local travel agents. English is widely spokent, and the natives are friendly.

We stayed in Protoras, a tin of baked beans was £1+ for example. If you could find the local large supermarket, then it was cheaper, but it was well hidden, off the usual routes.

Don't know where you stayed but we stayed in the Paphos area and their are lots of mini markets and a huge Co-op store so self catering would be very cheap. Fruit and veggies are so cheap on the markets too.
