Prague will really knock you out. In spite of the ever increasing hustle and bustle of the hordes of tourists which to some extent reduces the serenity of the city, I have no doubt that the majority of tourists will not leave dissapointed.

I went to Prague as part of a small group of people a few years ago. Arriving in the city at the railway station in the spring without any accommodation booked, we avoided the plethora of people offering accommodation in their houses and made our way to the tourist bureau there. Not that I would necessarily discourage you from getting accommodation the latter way - I have got accommodation this way in Budapest without any problems - you just have to use your gut instincts.

We were allocated our accommodation and given vague directions how to get there. After walking for about a mile and a half through an industrial suburb we finally got there after trying to communicate with several people - be warned very few people, especially over the age of say 30, speak English - German is much more widely spoken, albeit reluctantly. NEVER try your Russian.

The accommodation was spacious, if somewhat basic. The most important point was that we were living as real Czechs do, in a lived in appartment. The owner apparently was away from a long weekend. We therefore got far more out of our stay than we would have done in a Western hotel. An important factor is that it was very affordable. This option would not really be an option to those used to being pampered in the Ritz or Hilton, but for students it would be ideal.

Summary:
