Advantages: whatever age you are there is something to do
Disadvantages: none
The Dordogne is a beautiful department in southwest France which is a perfect holiday destination. It is named after the river Dordogne which is a clear river that is popular for watersports like kayaking and white water rafting. It is far enough South to be guaranteed a warm summer holiday, but not so far South that the journey becomes a nightmare. Driving from Calais takes about 8 hours, usually when travelling to the Dordogne we make an overnight stop in a Formula one hotel, however the joureny can be done quite easily in a day because France seems to have much less traffic than Britain.
I have holidayed in the Dordogne for about 8 years running, since I was quite young, and I have never been dissapointed. One of my favourite things about holidaying in the Dordogne is the food, the Aquitaine region which the Dordogne is in has very unique regional foods (like Cassoulet, a French casserole which is a must-taste) which makes restaurants in the Dordogne differnet to any others.
I think the Dordogne covers pretty much what anyone could want in a holiday; there is nightlife, watersports, picturesque walks, shopping and loads of tourist attractions. Places I would recommend visiting are the Lascal caves, a reproduction of a cave discovered with real cave paintings in, and crystal caves where you can see amazing stalagtite and mite formations. The bastide town Domme, and Beynac town where there is a lovely French market and lots of kayaking and canoeing companies. A day or half a day spent canoeing down the river dordogne is definitely a must, the water is so clear and warm that you can get out and have a paddle or even a swim if your brave, theres loads of places to stop for a picnic and the views are amazing, i remember once kayaking around a corner and seeing a small herd of cows marooned on an island. Probably my favourite place to visit in the Dordogne is the town of Sarlat, the market there is absolutely brilliant, and one of the things about it that I love is the night life, there are street performers on every road and it's all lit up. However if staying in Sarlat, I wouldn't recommend staying during the second week of August, as we did last year and it was so packed because not only were there loads of British tourists, but it was when the French had their holiday week so they were all there as well.
The Dordogne is a holiday destination which can be enjoyed despite your age or tastes, I'm 16 and holiday with three familys all of different ages and we all love it.
Summary: A beautiful place everyone can enjoy
