Dunedin is the main city of the south before you hit Invercargill on your way down.

It's a kind of 'gothic-y' town with old looking building... well old for new Zealand anyway!

In the city centre is the octagon where the street shoot off in all directions.. easy to drive around though.
This is another hilly city that actually holds the Guiness World Record for having the steepest steet in the world.. located in North East Valley.. (my best mate lives right next to it.. boy! Talk about sore legs!)

Yes, the street is exceptionally steep and people do live there, if you want to try and attempt to drive up it, the trick is to empty everything out of your car and get rid of any extra weight.. that way you might have a chance! Lord knows how they get their groceries home!

Apart from that you can drive out to the Peninsula and see the amazing Albatross and see the penguins struggling up the hill. The penguins stink.. if you get close to one.. but watching them trying to get up the sand dunes is hillarious! Half way up and then they all topple down!

The road signs are quite unusual for strangers.. like..
"Slow Down.. Penguin Crossing", not something you'd find in England thats for sure!

The beaches around Dunedin are typically stunning, the most popular beaches are St. Kilda and St. Clair where the surfing championships are normally held, then just down the road is the famous racetrack where you can go gamble your little heart away.. without paying extra for tax!

By the way.. I forgot to mention.. that anywhere in New Zealand, if you buy a car to do your travelling in it will be more cost effective. Insurance is not compulsory so it works out to be quite cheap.
The roads are nice and wide and we have one motorway!
(Until you enter Wellington or Auckland obviously), so the chances of you getting lost are quite rare!
