Advantages: Park the car and enjoy a stroll

Disadvantages: cobbled streets - flat heels ok!

Having travelled to Holland on numerous occasions I have to say that my favourite place to visit for a short break or a longer holiday is Edam which is just 30mins on the bus from Amsterdam.

Edam is a very small picturesque village with very traditional old Dutch properties on cobbled type roads bordering the many dykes.

It is very easy to get to everywhere in Edam as there are so many footbridges and little side streets. There are little museums a famous cheese market and some lovely eating places and gift shops as well as the most comprehensive fruit and vegetable shop I have ever seen. The prices are affordable and the local people all speak English and are very chatty and friendly.

There are several hotels - the main one being The Dam Hotel in the Market Square but my husband and I always stay at a small place called Cafe de Harmonie which is in Voorhaven (the road) The host is Siem-kees and he always makes us very welcome. He has several rooms which are very basic but also very cheap and you can also get a dutch breakfast there. He also has a small house next door to rent which is very nice. He has live music on Friday and Saturday nights and on Sunday evening, particularly blues and local musicians as well as visiting artistes.

Highly enjoyable place to visit you wouldn't be disappointed!
