EilatNewest Review: ... home' which had quite a friendly atmosphere with backpackers from all the world drifting in and out. The hostel is situated just down the road from the infamous 'Peace Café' which is like a home from home as all the brits collect there of an evening. The cafes and restaurants are very varied and reasonably priced with food available twenty-four hours a day. But be warned you need a stomach of ... more |

Its many years since I've been to Eilat but I still have very fond memories of the modern Israel. I backpacked around Egypt and Israel and Eilat was my last port of call. As with all backpackers after three months of travelling I was broke, Eilat was a good place to find casual work. The thing that I loved about Eilat, which kept me there for quite some time, was the diving. I did my diving licence in the Red Sea, which was out of this world, its like diving in an aquarium. There I saw Rays, turtles and all shapes and sizes of aquatic life. Some of the fish come up to you for feeding and you can always tickle the clown fish when they try and suck your fingers. ... I have been very lucky in that I have been scuba diving in many different parts of the world. The Red Sea and in particular Sharm-El-Sheikh is probably up there with some of the best. The first thing to say is that you can pick-up some great budget packages from the UK, just look in the back of any dive magazine to find some deals. Secondly it's just a short flight from the UK, you can pretty much go anytime of the year with good weather pretty much expected (although water temperatures will vary). The only downside about travelling is the scramble to get your visa when you arrive at the airport, it's unavoidable and remember to take foreign currency ... Read the complete review

My original op on Eilat was written a couple of years ago following a 5 day trip with a bunch of friends involving us learning to dive in the Red Sea, relaxing in the pool and checking out the local hot spots. Looking back on my original review, it is horrifically dated and poorly written. Having just returned from another short hop to Eilat I thought it appropriate to update and give you the benefit of a new perspective - whereas the last holiday was a very laddish affair, this time I went with a mate and a couple of ladies! ***A bit of history*** Eilat is Israel's southernmost city nestling on the north shore of the Red Sea and is ... Just after completing our Padi Open Water course in Scotland my husband and I decided to go to the Red Sea as we'd heard from other divers that it is the best place in the world to dive. We weren't bothered which part of the Red Sea we went to. We would've been happy to go to Hurghada or Sharm, however, we scoured the internet for bargains and ended up getting a week in Eilat, Israel, for £199 (7 days B&B) at the Moon Valley Hotel in the King's Wharf area in the centre of town. Eating out in restaurants in Eilat is extremely expensive. We ate falafel costing approximately £1.50 including a pint of beer, in the local cafes to save money. We then ... Read the complete review

Eilat is the southernmost point (quite literally point!) of Israel, between the Negev Desert (in Israel) and the Sinai Desert (in Egypt). It is something of an oddity, or at least, I found it so, as it is a city which has sprung up in the deserts. From the Red Sea (one of the most famous 'draws' of the area) you are able to see the borders with Egypt, Jordan (including a good view of one of the Jordanian Royal Family's holiday homes!), and even Saudi Arabia (on a clear day!). Eilat seems to be an afterthough, a tourist draw, and it is so completely different from the rest of Israel as Magaluf is from Madrid. She is a small city, and ... Read the complete review
