Advantages: Sun, fun, fodd, probably sex
Disadvantages: could be anywhere in the World, expensive for drinks and food.
We were glad to have a chance to relax after travelling all over Israel and taking in so much culture, so the thought of relaxing in the sun was very enticing. Our hotel was, well, American if you get my drift. Beautiful large room, with every facility you'd expect a la American, bathroom to die for, but the dreadful bright unforgiving lighting. Gross! Eilat is on the Red Sea. Lovely beaches, water sports of every description. Take an underwater trip in a yellow submarine and see the Coral Reef. They've built a wonderful underwater aquarium and you're there, but dry, amongst the glorious sea life in the Reef. We hired bikes and cycled round the Red Sea into Egypt, had a coffee at the Hilton(half the price then in Eilat) spent ages getting through across the border being questioned and searched! When I went, the border to Jordan was just being opened, so when you go, visit Petra, that's my next aim in the Middle East. Breakfast in all Israeli Hotels are splendid. It's amusing to see perfectly respectable people filling up their beach bags with food from breakfast to have for lunch. I can't blame them really, as it's an expensive resort. Loads of bars and places to eat, serving local food, but there in all their glory are Pizza Hut, MacDonalds and just about every ethnic eating place you can think of. One night in a bar we got very drunk watching a band called Jerry and the Pacemakers! It was the only way we could bear it. The weather is great all the year round, so a good place for a winter break. It's just that I could have been anywhere on the Med. Marbella springs to mind, so if you want culture then don't bother. If you want lovely weather, good food, water sports, night life, the go there.

- 08/07/00 The hot bit is interesting, as we went in January, so the weather was perfect. Good for a Winter Sun break, but still expensive. |

- 07/07/00 I would say only go to Eilat after travelling around Israel. If anyone wants a holiday on the Red Sea then Sharm-el-Sheik in Egypt is much nicer. For divers, this is close to the Rus Muhammed reef. An interesting side trip from Eilat would be to cross over into Aqaba, Jordan (not for you if you're a party animal though). And with a couple of days spare... travel to Petra.
To be honest, if I just wanted a beach holiday in Israel, I'd stay in Tel Aviv or Netanya, on the Mediterannean coast. In the summer, Eilat gets way too hot. |
