Advantages: Interesting day out.

Disadvantages: Hassle form the locals.

About an hour away from Monastir to the south west is El Jem. Its basically a small inland community based around a huge ampitheatre.
It dominates he horizon as you approach it. Towering into the air. When you arrive, you will be hassled by locals who allwant you to park in froont of their shop. They do this because they charge you 1 Dinar (50 pence) to "guard" you car. Its best to pay this or you may not have a car on your return!
All around the roman ruin are small shops selling roman antiquities that they claim are real. Such as coins, pottery and even bits of the structure!
It cost 4 Dinars to go in (£2) but in my opinion, well worth it. You can climb to the very top and look for miles and walk through where the lions were kept in the pits. Half of it has been restored to how it looked and some is left natural.
This is by far the best tourist attraction in Tunisia. Visit it if you go.
There is also a museum but we could not find it.
