Fiji

Description: Fiji (Fijian: Matanitu ko Viti; Hindustānī: फ़िजी, ... more
Fiji ... فِجی), officially the Republic of the Fiji Islands, is an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean east of Vanuatu, west of Tonga and south of Tuvalu. The country occupies an archipelago of about 322 islands, of which 106 are permanently inhabited, and 522 islets. The two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, account for 87% of the population. The name Fiji is the old Tongan word for the islands, which in turn is derived from the Fijian name Viti. A military coup d'état led by Commodore Frank Bainimarama deposed the civilian government of Laisenia Qarase on 5 December 2006, with Bainimarama declaring that he had "reluctantly" assumed the functions of the Presidency in an interim capacity. He handed the presidency back to Ratu Josefa Iloilo on 4 January 2007, and was appointed interim Prime Minister by Iloilo the next day.

Premium Review Fiji and Robinson Crusoe Island (604 words)

Fiji can be found in the South Pacific and can be reached by flights from Los Angeles and Auckland. On arrival at about 3am, we were greeted by a traditional band playing music while we waited to go through customs, a great first impression. We flew in to the main airport in Nadi and stayed nearby. Nadi is a small town with all the amenities you need. A great attraction here is the temple, it is so colourful! Our stay here is best split in to two parts. 1) We stayed at a hostel about 10 mins from Nadi town centre. We used this a base for our trip, but came across one sight that epitomised the Fijian relaxed way to life. Their police station was a small caravan at ...  Read the complete review

“There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going,” read the Thought for the Day in the Fiji Times. This at least gave me something to think about as my wife and I lounged by the pool at the Tanoa International Hotel just outside Nadi. Having travelled half-way around the world in just two days to be there, I was inclined to think that we had indeed taken a short cut. The first visitors to these shores from Europe took years over the journey, and suffered on the way. Surely the earth was never meant to be so small as it is now, nor finding one’s way to its ends so effortless. More to the point, having taken the short cut, had we arrived at anywhere ...  Read the complete review

Last year I travelled around the world. Singapore, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and LA but Fiji was simply breath taking. All of the places I visited had a beauty and a uniqueness about them. For instance I loved Hawaii because it was so laid back and had that tacky but lovable touristy thing going for it. I loved New Zealand because of its amazing countryside and the vitality dripping from the greeness of its rolling hills to the pureness of its lakes and valleys. There just is nowhere like Fiji though. For a holiday, for those that appreciate white sand, aquamarine crystal clearwater, palm trees, hammocks swinging in a light fragrant breeze, an array of ...  Read the complete review
