We paused at the crossing to let a freight train go by and were astounded by the length of the train, it just seemed to go on forever! And the noise it made was deafening. As we later discovered, it was that very train line that put Flagstaff on the map. In the late 19th Century, Flagstaff became the largest town on the line between Albuquerque in New Mexico and the West Coast. One fine sunny day, in the spring of last year, I spent an afternoon in Flagstaff, a small mountain town in Northern Arizona. I was on a three-week trip in the States with my travel buddy, and after the madness of Las Vegas, and three spectacular days at the Grand Canyon, it was time to catch our "ride" to the West Coast, the overnight Amtrak train to L.A. We were dropped off at the railway station in Flagstaff in the early afternoon, and since our "Southwest Chief" train service wasn't leaving until around 9pm, we had half a day to kill.
